It’s raining outside of my house right now.
And as I am sitting here listening to the rain outside I realized it’s actually quiet in my house right now.
Now that could be because everyone is asleep, but I am going to say it is because of the rain helping keep things peaceful.
In a few hours, things may not be as peaceful and that’s when my rainy day kits help my days go so much faster.
You can create a rainy day kit for any reason.
Anything from a productivity kit for moms wanting to make the most out of a day inside, an indoor activities kit for the little ones to keep away the boredom, rainy day homeschool lesson plan kits, and so much more.
Here are some of the easy ideas and lessons you can try out to help keep everyone happy whether they are inside or outside.
Ideas for Inside Play:
Rainy Day Coloring Sheets:
Great for young learners and early readers it is so easy to pair with a weather or seasons curriculum but is especially fun for a quick rainy day idea.
Help refine those fine motor skills using this rainy day coloring freebie that covers things rainy and weather-related. The pictures are large enough for preschoolers with weather terms that are great for up to 1st grade.

Simply print and COLOR. Get it here.
Spell the Word Exercise Chart:
This freebie is so much fun because you can use it for absolutely anything.
It is a great way to get your little ones up and moving especially when the weather is looking a little dreary.
How to Use It:
Decide on what way you will choose words (for example, rainy day words, names of family members, or words of items you see in the room) then your little one will say one of those words (ex. rainy day words they choose umbrella). After they choose a word they would then have to do the tasks listed with by letter.
So they would do all the activities list for U-M-B-R-E-L-L-A.
This is a fun one because it helps them practice spelling plus sharpens those recall skills. If your little one can choose a word, but can’t spell it just yet feel free to help them along.
The bonus of this freebie is that these exercises while simple definitely help even the rowdiest little ones drain lots of energy with little hassle on you.
Download the FREE exercises today and jot down a few categories on the back of the sheet that you can use when you pull it out.
This freebie also works well on any occasions that you may want to get your little one up and at ’em.

Ideas for Outside Play:
Play in the Rain:
One of the MOST common things to do is go outside and just enjoy the rain.
Gear up with some clothes that you don’t mind if they end up stained and their raincoats and boots and make the most of the weather.
This is best when it has been raining for a while so that they can take advantage of puddles that form.
Another great idea is to bring some bath toys and play with them. Have them choose toys that may work best for rainy weather like ducks, frogs, or boats.
The fun is honestly ENDLESS and your little ones will probably come up with their own things to do while they are outside on their own.
Take Rainy Day Photos:
An idea that is really great for the entire family is to take one or more waterproof cameras out and capture some unique photos.
Taking photos in the rain not only allows for a new perspective, but you may be able to catch some animals out and about that you may not normally see.
Plus, the look of rain on different objects really makes for some distinct photos.
Afterward, let your little one look over their pictures and choose their favorite one. You can then head over to your local CVS and print the photos right in the store.
Make the most of it by grabbing a frame from your local dollar store and putting up the photo somewhere they can enjoy it again and again.
Search for Rainbows:
One of the best parts of a rainy day is that afterward you can find a rainbow.
Just the beauty of a rainbow combined with the great traditions that surround rainbows make for great conversation.
I remember as a little kid my mom would tell us about there being a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but that it’s basically impossible to ever get to the end of one. Of course, we didn’t believe her and so she would drive us around to “find the end of a rainbow” as a fun way to spend time together after a day of being stuck inside after the rain.
It was so much fun riding along and playing different games in the car.
Even if you don’t drive around just getting outside to find a rainbow is so much fun. Plus, sometimes you may get lucky and find a double rainbow.
Most Importantly:
Just remember to enjoy the day. There is nothing wrong with spending a rainy day inside just watching a family-friendly movie, listening to the rain, or turning off the lights and making shadow puppets.
Something we really love to do as a family is to sit around and have family talking time.
We have a running list of fun, family-friendly topics and will just pick one at a time and talk about them.
If you are looking to keep the day educational then grab all the worksheets above and put them in a rainy day folder.
Pull them out when the weather changes and you will have plenty of activities that everyone will love.
