New Year. New You, right?
Are you already falling short of your goals? Or have you been searching for the inspiration to get started?
The solution is here.
These 5 tips to achieve every goal you set are not only easy but are critical to you successfully crushing all your goals/resolutions.
So let’s get this started.
1. Set Your Goals Correctly
A goal should be specific and have a time length set to it. You want to be able to pinpoint what you are working toward.
A goal should be measurable in some way. A goal should be realistic and attainable.
For example:
- Bad Goal- Save more money.
- Unrealistic-Save $20,000 in 6 months
- Better Goal-Save $6,000 by Dec 2020
Using the examples above. Setting a broad goal doesn’t give you anything to really work toward.
You could technically save $5 more than what you have before and you ‘saved money’.
Yet, setting a goal too high isn’t the motivation you need because if you know you can’t achieve it without going to the extreme, then you are setting yourself up to fail.
And we don’t want that.
Whereas, with the example of a good goal you have set a realistic goal amount and put a specific time frame. You can now break that goal down into smaller parts to start succeeding.
So now you need to save $500 a month or $250 every two weeks. Much easier, right?
2. Take time to reflect on your goals weekly or biweekly
If you choose to not do everything here to be successful then the one thing you want to do is reflect on your goals.
Weekly reflections are the most effective, but even biweekly can help you maintain your focus toward the endgame.
When you create goals, human nature automatically puts it at the front of our mind for a few days, but after those few days the thoughts get pushed to the side.
To avoid letting your goals fall haphazardly to the side take time to think about:
- What went well that week
- What you struggled with
- What you could change or work on
to keep the goal on track
Doing these reflections gives you perspective on your goals and allows you to see the progress you are making along the way without getting caught waiting for the big picture.
Being able to appreciate the moment of what you already accomplished is why the next tip matters.
In addition to weekly reviews, you should do reviews mid-year or monthly. You can use the mid-year review goal journal to ensure you are staying on track.
3. Celebrate your small wins
As you accomplish a part of your goal take a moment to celebrate it. If you are trying to save money and met your monthly goal toward the big picture enjoy it.
Pat yourself on the back you deserve it. Have a self-care day by pampering
yourself at home or eat a special dessert.
No matter if you treat yourself in a big or small way. Recognize that you are on the right track and keep going.
Now don’t go spend all the money you just saved you have to remember to keep the celebrating within reason.
Just because you are working on a goal doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yourself.
Big or small a win is a win.
4. Tell Your Goals to Someone Else Who Cares
I love having an accountability partner it makes getting through a goal that much easier.
Having someone to question you when you’re slipping up or to encourage you when you’re feeling frustrated can make all the difference.
If you go the route of an accountability partner make sure they are reliable and great with communicating.
This person should be able to be called on when you need them as well as genuinely cares about you and what you are trying to accomplish with your goals.
Even if you don’t go that route tell your goals to a few friends and family that you know will be encouraging.
Think about it. Have you ever told a friend you were going to start a project? Now every time you talk to them they are asking you how that project is going.
Even if you know you haven’t looked at that hobby or project since the day you mentioned it to them. They remember. That checking in helps you stay on track just like an accountability partner would.
The check-ins may not be as frequent but they do happen. Others knowing the goals you set helps keep you motivated.
And being motivated and focused is half the battle toward accomplishing your dreams.
5. Don’t Give Up.
Doing better for yourself and your family isn’t easy. You have to be uncomfortable in your current state to move forward.
One of my favorite quotes from GoodReads that keeps me pushing toward growth is…
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
― Anais Nin
So as you work towards your goals you must remember you aren’t perfect.
Sometimes you will just barely miss a goal.
Other times you may miss the mark completely.
Sometimes you will get frustrated or tired.
No matter what you can’t give up. Use it as a way to improve.
As long as you don’t stop then you just haven’t reached your final destination yet. It is once you stop that you have failed yourself.
And we aren’t going to let that happen. Right?!
Ultimately, if you set a realistic goal within a reasonable time period you CAN achieve any goal you set.
Just take time to reflect on those goals and keep them at the top of your priority list. Make them a daily part of your routine.
But most of all don’t give up on yourself. Giving up on a goal guarantees you will never achieve it.
