The 4th of July holiday is a day for celebrating and fun, but many of your family’s favorite activities can be dangerous. Especially when there are small children around.
“In 2020, an estimated 15,600 people were hospitalized with injuries related to fireworks- the highest number in over 15 years,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission reported.
To help make the 4th of July a great day with the entire family I have 10 tips you can use to help keep your family safe.
Safety Tips:
1. Don’t point fireworks at others especially when lighting.
2. Don’t let kids light or hold fireworks other than the simple sparklers.
3. Only light fireworks when they are placed on the ground.
4. Keep a small bucket of water or fire extinguisher close by in case of emergencies.
5. Do not grill under branches, overhead areas, or near decks or other structures.
6. Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing when grilling or lighting fireworks.
7. If going swimming keep any children under constant supervision.
8. Be sure to wear sunscreen and reapply according to your package directions.
9. Use good judgment at all times.
10. Stay aware of your surroundings.
Just Remember:
Most of these tips while common knowledge or easily forgotten about on the day of. So many accidents happen to adults who have been enjoying fireworks year after year.
Ultimately, life is all about finding a balance between fun and safety.
It’s simple always keep an eye out on children when swimming and stay hydrated. July is normally the hottest month of the year, so keep your skin and body protected.
When grilling leave your pit in an open space and don’t wear loose clothing. If using a gas grill remember to open it before lighting it.
Lastly, I know we all love a good fireworks show. Remember when watching stay back a reasonable distance. Never light fireworks in your hand and keep water or other emergency tools nearby in case of an emergency.
