Motherhood is often a thankless job. Yes, you love the little smiles, take pride in the growing moments, and cherish every little kiss and snuggle.
But how often do your children, partner, or family really thank you for how well you handle the nitty-gritty of being a mom, partner, or friend? As a mom, it’s just you know…EXPECTED.
You are the mom so you must handle everything. You must wear all the hats. And although I don’t know one mom who would trade their kids for anything in this world it can still be too heavy to carry some days.
It is during your hardest days that you have to find a way to appreciate how much you do and forgive yourself when you feel tired or want to take a break. One amazing technique to get through the tough times is to reaffirm yourself with positive affirmations.
These 5 quick tips will help you discover why positive affirmation works and how it can help you. Also, I have included 15 inspirational quotes that you can put in your planner, homeschool binder, or even frame to assist you during the tougher days.
Let’s get started…
Positive affirmations according to Kathryn J Lively Ph.D. from Psychology Today are “used to reprogram the subconscious mind, to encourage us to believe certain things about ourselves or about the world and our place within it.”
This ‘self-reprogramming’ is scientifically proven to improve your life. Creating a positive reality that you believe subconsciously will improve your daily life.
In the same way, having a negative mindset will manifest negativity and even sadness into your life.
To use positive affirmations to get through your hardest days as a mom you have to incorporate a few things into your life starting today.
1. Use the Affirmations Daily
Changing your mental viewpoint requires daily work. You will want to use your positive affirmations as close to every day as you can.
A mental shift is a lifetime lifestyle change. You must work toward the positive things you want in your life.
Especially if you struggle with believing in yourself or mastering a positive outlook on yourself because creating a daily habit will help you change your views.
If you feel you suffer from depression or other mental health issues to reach out to consult a therapist. If you need immediate help or someone to talk to SAMHSA’s [Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration] National Helpline – 1-800-662-HELP (4357) is available 365 days a year 24 hours a day.
2. Make a List
You can find positive affirmations in many places. Such as online, in books, etc. Then, you can make a list of the ones that work for you.
I have even included a free printable of positive affirmation quotes there are 15 ones specifically for moms.
Once you have your list you want to put it somewhere you can see it all the time. This can be a bathroom mirror, near your computer, on your steering wheel, etc.
Being able to see them at any given time helps you recite them frequently. Every time you see them take a moment to take a few deep breaths and say your positive affirmation.
3. Have Someone Else Read the Affirmations to You
Do you have a relative, mentor, or friend that you are comfortable having help you?
Have that person read your affirmations to you by saying ‘you are ___________’. As they read to you truly listen and reflect on how you are really that person.
You must believe that you embody those beliefs. Really say that you are the traits being discussed can make all the difference in changing some negative thoughts you may have surrounding who you are.
4. Practice Deep Breathing While You Read Them
Just like meditation or yoga deep breathing helps regulate your energy. By taking deep breaths it sends messages to your brain to relax and calm down.
That then helps you manage your stress levels. Doing this in combination with reading your affirmations provides clarity and calmness which makes the subconscious work easier in the long run.
If you can do this for 20 to 30 minutes a day it will have major positive impacts on your mental health.
5. Create Your Own Positive Affirmations
One of the greatest ways to make the most out of positive affirmations is by making them personal to you.
When you are having a tough day and all you can seem to do is feel bad for yourself stop and take a moment to write some positive thoughts. This is something you want to try to do not only in that moment but in the long term.
Write the sentences in the first person, use the present tense, and keep it short.
Use examples like: I am enough. I am kind. I am a good mom. I do the best I can for my family.
Making the Changes
Remember that using positive affirmations won’t only get you through your hardest days, but they will impact your entire future in a beneficial way.
You can create mental behaviors that will change how you tackle tough situations and that inspire you to push forward with focus.
Start by writing your own affirmations, then making a list of yours plus others that encourage you, and then use them daily by putting them somewhere you can see easily. These behaviors will allow the affirmations to shift not your mindset and your life.
